The Chief Minister’s campaign was aimed at preventing road accidents and deaths due to drunk driving during the New Year’s celebrations and other festivals in the state.
Accompanied by several top police personnel, CM Sarma visited places such as Ganeshguri, Bhangagarh, Ulubari, Guwahati Club, Chandmari and Zoo Road and took stock of the campaign against drunk drivers on New Year’s Eve.
Many people were overwhelmed with the fact that the Chief Minister himself was present at the spot to do the checkings.
CM Sarma wished New Year greetings to the commuters even as he visited all the spots for checking. He also took stock of the functioning of the restaurants and the food delivery executives who were working amid the New Year’s rush.
Interestingly, one person was caught for drunk driving at Chandmari locality while CM Sarma was present there. While the person was lodged at the Chandmari police station, his family members were sent home via cab as per the instructions of the Chief Minister.
Later, taking to social media, CM Sarma lauded the Assam Police in its efforts in the campaign against drunk driving. He also said that the response has been overwhelming to make New Year’s Eve accident-free. He also stated that the government would continue the effort to make 2022 a year free of accidents.
From today onwards, police in Assam will keep an eye on drunk drivers among revellers who go for a picnic. As per the instructions of the Chief Minister, all vehicles going and coming from well-known picnic spots would be checked and anyone found drunk driving would be penalised.
