Assam Cabinet Approves Arms Licences: All licenses will be issued in strict adherence to existing arms laws.

In a significant policy shift, the Assam Cabinet has approved arms licenses for citizens residing in remote, vulnerable, and border areas of the state. Making the announcement, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the decision was taken keeping in mind Assam’s complex geographical and security challenges.

“Assam is a difficult and sensitive state. We have decided to grant arms licenses to eligible persons residing in such areas. We will encourage original inhabitants and indigenous Indian citizens to apply under the provisions of the Arms Act,” CM Sarma said briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting.

The move aims to empower indigenous communities, particularly in regions where law enforcement presence is limited, to protect themselves against unlawful threats and hostile elements. Sarma clarified that this initiative is not intended to militarise the civilian population but to instill a sense of security among those most at risk.

All licenses will be issued in strict adherence to existing arms laws, with each application undergoing thorough scrutiny.

Taking to X, the Chief Minister posted, “The #AssamCabinet has today taken a very important decision to protect the interests of our Jati, Mati, Bheti. Arms Licenses will be granted to Original Inhabitants and indigenous Indian people living in vulnerable areas to tackle unlawful threats from hostile quarters.”
