Tragedy struck at Neematighat on Wednesday near the world’s largest river island Majuli, after two passenger laden boats collided with each other.

Close to hundred people are feared missing in the accident even as at least 41 have been rescued by joint teams of NDRF and SDRF.

At least 1 person has been confirmed dead so far and it is being feared that the numbers may rise. As per reports, the deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Parineeta Das, who hails from Guwahati.

One of the two ferry boats, the smaller one, turned turtle in the raging river waters after colliding with the other boat.

The ferry was reportedly travelling to Neematighat near Jorhat from Kamalabari in Majuli.

While it is difficult to ascertain the total number of people onboard the ferries it is estimated that over 100 people may have been on board the boats.

The incident happened around 100 meters away from the river port in Neematighat.

As we speak both Deputy Commissioners of both Jorhat and Majuli are on the spot overseeing the rescue operations carried out by the NDRF and SDRF.

Search is currently underway to rescue the other passengers from the spot. Teams of NDRF and SDRF have already begun their rescue mission on the spot.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed the district authorities of Majuli and Jorhat to exercise all resources in the rescue efforts.
