Assam Attracts Rs 46,000 Crore Investment Commitment in Mining sector: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined a sustainable and reform-driven roadmap for mining in the region.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state’s mining sector has attracted investment commitments to the tune of Rs 46,000 crore. Chief Minister Sarma made this announcement at the 2nd North East Mining Ministers’ Conclave, held in Sonapur near Guwahati in the presence of Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy and urged the Centre to support the state in its sustainable mining initiatives.

Chief Minister Sarma outlined a sustainable and reform-driven roadmap for mining in the region. Highlighting the state’s forward-thinking vision, he stressed that Assam is “opening up the sector” and introducing reforms to “sustainably exploit opportunities that lie in the region.”

Taking to X, CM wrote, “The North East region holds immense potential in the mining sector with abundant natural resources. We are opening up the sector and bringing in the necessary reforms to sustainably exploit the opportunities in the region.”

The Chief Minister mentioned about the state’s focus on “zero-waste mining” and principles of the circular economy, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of environmentally responsible development.

The conclave, chaired by Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy, brought together ministers from all eight Northeastern states and various industry stakeholders. It served as a platform to discuss sustainable and scientific mining, policy reforms, and ease of doing business in the resource sector.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy underlined the need for center-state synergy to attract investment and innovation in the mining domain while preserving environmental integrity.

The event, jointly organized by the Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Coal, and the Government of Assam, is a key initiative under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ mission. It aims to unlock the mineral and coal potential of the region and contribute to balanced regional development.

With Assam taking the lead and reaffirming its commitment to responsible mining, the conclave marked a significant step toward realizing the Northeast’s resource and economic potential.
