The accused, Muzakir Ahmed and Sahanul Alam Laskar, were taken into custody in Badarpur, Sribhumi District.

Assam Police have intensified their crackdown on the menace of online trading scams, arresting two masterminds on March 9 who were behind a Rs 400 crore fraud.

The accused, Muzakir Ahmed and Sahanul Alam Laskar, were taken into custody in Badarpur, Sribhumi District. They allegedly ran the online trading scam through their firm, Shakir & Company, duping unsuspecting investors of massive sums.

Authorities have been actively pursuing fraudsters involved in online trading scams in the state. On March 1, police arrested another accused, Chinomy Das, for allegedly cheating investors of at least Rs 50 crore. Investigators believe he orchestrated the fraud with the help of his parents and girlfriend. Further investigations are underway to trace additional culprits and recover the siphoned funds.

The crackdown also stems from a large-scale investigation into online trading frauds in Assam, which have led to multiple arrests in recent past months. One significant development is the case of actor and influencer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband, Tarkik Borah. They were arrested on September 12, 2024, after surrendering to the police. The couple had been absconding since September 2, following the arrest of scam kingpin Bishal Phukan.

Phukan’s arrest on September 2, 2024, exposed a multi-crore scam in which thousands of investors lost their hard-earned money. Following his capture, authorities conducted multiple raids in Meghalaya and Bihar to track down those involved.

Meanwhile, in a related update, the Gauhati High Court recently granted bail to Sumi Bora in a case investigated by the CBI. However, she remains in Guwahati Central Jail as she has not secured bail in two other cases registered at Duliajan and Borborua police stations. These cases are still under active investigation by Assam Police.
