Arunachal: First primary angioplasty in TRIHMS saves life of 61-year-old who had gone to meet son in ITBP

In a milestone achievement, doctors at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Arunachal Pradesh successfully performed the state’s first primary angioplasty, saving the life of a 61-year-old diabetic patient.

The patient, who had come from outside Assam to visit his son, personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), was admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar after experiencing severe chest pain yesterday.

He was later diagnosed with Inferior wall myocardial infarction (MI) and was shifted to TRIHMS.

Since he was in the window period (for a test designed to detect a specific disease), he was thrombolysis with streptokinase. Despite that, he experienced a heart attack.

Following this, he was taken to the catheter lab to undergo a primary PTCA (percutaneous transcoronary angioplasty). After a Temporary Pacemaker (TPI) was done, and Coronary angiography (CAG) of Left Coronary Artery (LCA) was performed, doctors detected severe disease in the Left Anterior Descending (LAD).

He then experienced ventricular tachycardia (VT) before the Right coronary artery (RCA) could be hooked.

After the patient received a defibrillator shock, CPR was initiated.

Doctors performed an emergency primary angioplasty, which was completed successfully, marking a significant milestone for the hospital and the state.

He is currently in ICCU for monitoring and recuperation.

The Cardiology team comprise of Dr Rinchin Dorjee Megeji, Associate professor Cardiology; Dr Tony ete, Assistant professor Cardiology; Dr Sindu Damde, Junior Resident Cardiology; Technician Margo Bagra ; lab technician Mukhtarul Ali cath and nursing officers Karnu Poyom and Sandhya.
