Arunachal assembly polls 2024: 28 new faces, 3 women in Cong’s first list of 34 candidates

Congress in Arunachal Pradesh today announced its first list of 34 candidates for the upcoming 60-member Assembly elections in the state.
In the first list, the party has fielded 28 new faces, 3 women. The list also includes names of two former Home Ministers of the state.
The women candidates are–Marina Kenglang from Changlang North, Jermai Krong from Tezu and Gollo Yapung Tana from Pakke-Kasang.
Five-time Nacho MLA and former Arunachal Home Minister, Tanga Byaling has been fielded from the Nacho assembly constituency in Upper Subanshiri district for the sixth time.
A Congress leader since 1999, Tanga Byaling won the Nacho seat in 1989, 1999, 2004,2009 and 2014. He joined the National People’s Party (NPP) in 2018. He was with NPP for a short period of time and then re-joined the Congress during the 2019 assembly elections in the state. Tanga Byaling was the Home Minister of Arunachal Pradesh from 2014-2016.
Three-time Bameng MLA Kumar Waii, who too served as Home Minister of the state (from 2017-19) has been fielded from Bameng assembly seat in East Kameng district for another term.
Waii has also served as the Minister of Urban Development from 2014 to 2019 in the Pema Khandu-led Arunachal Pradesh government.
He joined Congress in 2001. He won the Bameng seat as a Congress candidate in 2004, 2009, and 2014. In 2017, he resigned from Congress and joined BJP. In 2019, he switched over to NPP after being denied a ticket to contest the assembly election. In the 2019 assembly elections, he had contested on NPP ticket but lost to BJP’s Goruk Pordung. In 2023, he re-joined Congress.
Congress has named the party general secretary and in-charge of the City Congress Committee (CCC), Yumlam Achung from the Itanagar assembly seat.
Achung had contested from Itanagar in the 2019 Assembly election and managed to poll 2,173 votes. He lost to then JD-U candidate Techi Kaso who polled 12,162. Kaso is now a BJP leader and is contesting from the Itanagar seat again.
