Joint Secretary (Northeast), Ministry of Home Affairs, Satyendra Garg on Thursday said that the Centre will welcome ULFA-I Commander-in-Chief Paresh Barua, provided the rebel leader agrees to abide by the Constitution by abjuring violence.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, the top Home Ministry official ruled out holding talks on the ULFA-I’s sole demand of sovereignty as he maintained that the peace initiative will be taken forward in a constitutional manner.

This is the first reaction of the Ministry of Home Affairs after the Assam government on behalf of the Centre offered an olive branch to the ULFA-Independent Chief Paresh Barua to join the peace process.

Subsequent to this, Paresh Baruah indicated that the outfit may be ready for discussion, given the core issue of sovereignty remains the prime agenda for the talks.

All eyes are as to how things will move forward at a time when Bodo insurgency has come to an end as all the four factions of the NDFB have joined the peace process.
