Anti dam protest in Arunachal gets shot in the arm. Affected Citizens of Teesta , Sikkim extends solidarity with the ongoing resistance

Anti dam protest in Arunachal: The Teesta Group has urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the Adi people.
The Adi people of Arunachal Pradesh got a shot in the arm after the Affected Citizens of Teesta or ACT, Sikkim extended its solidarity with them in their ongoing resistance to the proposed 12,500 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project in the Siang Valley.
In a joint press statement with the Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur and the Borok Peoples’ Human Rights Organization, Tripura, ACT condemned the central government’s decision to proceed with the SUMP survey, allegedly without the consent of the Adi people and the deployment of security forces at the dam site.
This group, which includes organizations like the Affected Citizens of Teesta from Sikkim and the Centre for Research and Advocacy from Manipur has opposed the project due to concerns about its environmental impact, displacement of local communities, and lack of free, prior, and informed consent. The Teesta Group aims to raise awareness and pressure the government to halt the project’s pre-feasibility report survey and deployment of security forces.
The group expressed concern that the project will displace local communities and harm the environment, particularly in light of the 2023 Teesta-III dam disaster in Sikkim.
The Teesta Group has urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the Adi people, address their concerns, and halt the project until their consent is obtained.
Meanwhile the situation remains tense at Boleng in Siang district as the government of Arunachal Pradesh is trying to break the deadlock with protestors. Arunachal cabinet minister Ojing Tasing is engaging in crucial meeting with different stakeholders in a bid to resolve issues and allay apprehensions surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
The meeting is underway at the Siang DC office. More than 100 villagers gathered at the premises of the DC office, demanding that their concerns be heard. Inputs suggest anti-dam activist Bhanu Tatak is also attending the meeting.
It is worth mentioning that a young anti-dam activist Ebo Milli is facing legal action for allegedly leading villagers to launch an indefinite protest against the Siang multi-purpose project in Siang district.
Deputy Commissioner of Siang district, PN Thungon lodged a complaint on Monday with Boleng police station alleging violation of prohibitory orders over the protest at Beging village, where a pre-feasibility study for the project is to be carried out.
