Anjali Ekka, first girl from Oraon community of Assam to earn MBBS Degree

Assam Anjali Ekka's journey from a humble tea garden village to becoming a doctor is an inspiring story of perseverance and determination.

It’s a moment of pride for the the Oraon community of Assam. Anjali Ekka has become the first girl from the community to earn an MBBS degree.

Hailing from Lalmati, Kokrajhar Tea Estate, Anjali completed her medical studies from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), marking a historic milestone for her community.

Anjali’s journey from a humble tea garden village to becoming a doctor is an inspiring story of perseverance and determination.

Her achievement not only brings joy to her family but also serves as a beacon of hope for countless children from marginalised tea garden communities.

Congratulating Anjali, BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro said, “May her story continue to inspire many more children from the tea garden communities and others in BTR and beyond to dream big and achieve greater heights. We are proud of you, Dr. Anjali!”

The Oraon, or Kurukh, are a Dravidian-speaking indigenous group traditionally dependent on forests and agriculture. Many Oraons migrated to Assam’s tea gardens during British colonial rule, where they faced socio-economic challenges.

Anjali’s success symbolises a step forward in breaking barriers for her community.

In another proud achievement, Martina Tudu has become the first Santal girl from Assam to earn an MBBS degree.

A native of Ajarbari village in Hojai district, Martina completed her medical education at Tezpur Medical College.

Her success is being celebrated widely within the Santal community, marking a significant milestone in their history.

Both Anjali and Martina’s achievements are being hailed as inspirational.
