AMVCA Withdraws Petition Over Village Council Term Curtailment, To File New Plea

First Published: 12th December, 2024 17:41 IST

The petition, which was scheduled for its first hearing today at the Gauhati High Court's Aizawl bench, will be replaced with a new one.

The All Mizoram Village Council Association (AMVCA) has decided to withdraw its petition against the Mizoram government regarding the reduction of the Village Council term and replace it with a new one.

The Gauhati High Court’s Aizawl bench was scheduled to hear the plea today.
AMVCA President K. Lalngaizuala said that the petition, initially submitted on December 6, 2024, was filed in response to a government notification issued on November 20, 2024, which sought to shorten the Village Council term.

However, the government issued a new notification on November 21, 2024, without prior knowledge or consultation with the AMVCA, rendering the petition filed on November 20 invalid.

Lalngaizuala confirmed that the AMVCA will soon file a fresh petition addressing the updated notification.

He emphasized that the association is committed to addressing the matter through legal channels.

The AMVCA’s original petition sought to challenge the government’s move to shorten the term of the village councils, a decision that has sparked considerable controversy among local leaders and the association.
