Amid the ongoing unrest in Manipur, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, and Director General of Assam Rifles, reaffirmed the force’s steadfast dedication to righteousness and serving the people of the Northeast.
Speaking to media in Shillong, he stated, “We are here to ensure that we come together with the people, serve them, and do our best. No matter what happens, we will never deviate from the righteous path. Those who do right must face everything, but we will not leave the path of righteousness and continue to connect with the community.”
He highlighted the deep connection Assam Rifles shares with the region, saying, “A large number of our soldiers hail from the Northeast. We are part of this society, not separate from it. You serve the nation in your way, just as we do in ours. The Northeast is a beautiful place and a wonderful region to live in. Time will tell.”
Commenting about the reports of the potential raising of additional battalion in maintaining peace and securing the Indo-Myanmar border, Lt Gen Lakhera stated, “This decision lies with the Government of India. We are eager to grow, and whatever is recommended in this regard, time will reveal.”
The DG also shed light on the force’s extensive disaster response capabilities, particularly their contributions during calamities. He mentioned their NDRF battalion stationed in Ludhiana, emphasizing the unit’s swift response to crises such as floods, landslides, accidents, and emergencies requiring medical assistance in the region. “We are the largest single donor of blood in the Northeast. The veins of countless citizens carry the blood of Assam Rifles soldiers,” he added proudly.
On modernization, Lt Gen Lakhera spoke about the adoption of advanced technologies, ensuring that Assam Rifles remains a leader not only in security operations but also in humanitarian efforts.
