The court has fixed May 5 as the next date of hearing.
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has granted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ten more days to submit its final report in connection with the petition alleging that Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, holds dual citizenship. The court has fixed May 5 as the next date of hearing.
The petition, filed by Karnataka-based lawyer and BJP member S Vignesh Shishir in July last year, claims that Rahul Gandhi also holds British citizenship. The petitioner demanded the cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship and his disqualification from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
Shishir stated in his petition that he possesses documents and emails that allegedly prove Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen, making him ineligible to contest elections in India. He said he had approached the concerned authorities twice with the complaint, but since no action was taken, he filed the petition before the court.
Earlier, during a hearing on March 25, the Centre had sought eight weeks’ time to file its response. However, the court only granted four weeks and had fixed April 21 for the next hearing. Now, with the latest extension of ten more days granted by the court, the new hearing date is May 5.
The case continues to draw political attention as it involves serious allegations against one of the country’s top opposition leaders. The court’s final decision is awaited with keen interest across the political spectrum.
