The Kaziranga constituency is one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam. Let’s look into this recently created Lok Sabha constituency that came into existence post the delimitation process.
How did Kaziranga constituency come into existence?
The Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency, which was a stronghold of Congress ceases to exist after the delimitation process carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in August last year. A new constituency – Kaziranga came into being.
What are the areas it covers?
Kaliabor, Barhampur, Binnakandi, Hojai, Lumding, Golaghat, Dergaon and Khumtai, Bokakhat and Sarupathar falls under Kaziranga Constituency, however, 4 seats that used to be in Kaliabor – Dhing, Batadraba, Rupohihat, and Samaguri – have been included in the Nagaon constituency.
Here is how delimitation of Kaliabor might impact Gaurav Gogoi and Congress?
Gaurav Gogoi won the Kaliabor seat twice in 2014 and 2019. It had 10 Assembly seats – Dhing, Batadroba, Rupohihat, Samaguri, Kaliabor, Bokakhat, Sarupathar, Golaghat, Khumtai and Dergaon. Batadroba, Rupohihat and Samaguri are with Congress, Dhing is with AIUDF and the rest are with BJP and its ally AGP.
In 2019, Gaurav Gogoi won from Kaliabor with 7,85,014 votes defeating AGP’s Moni Madhab Mahanta.
The margin of victory was 2,10,558 votes.
In 2014, he won from Kaliabor with 4,43,032 votes defeating BJP’s Mrinal Kumar Saikia. The margin of victory was 93,770 votes. Now Gaurav Gogoi will be contesting from Jorhat.
Jorhat has 10 Assembly seats – Sonari, Mahmara, Demow, Sibsagar, Nazira, Majuli, Teok, Jorhat, Mariani and Titabar. Except for Titabar and Nazira, the rest of the Assembly seats are held by BJP and AGP (an ally of BJP) and Sibsagar is with Akhil Gogoi and Independent. Jorhat is now represented by BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi, who is contesting for another term from Jorhat.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Topon Kumar Gogoi of the BJP emerged victorious, securing 51.35% of the votes, while Sushanta Borgohain of the INC was the first runner-up with 43.54% of the votes.
Over the years, Jorhat has been represented by both Congress and the BJP. Bijoy Krishna Handique of the INC (Congress) won the constituency in 1999, 2004, and 2009, while Kamakhya Prasad Tasa of the BJP won in 2014. Topon Kumar Gogoi’s victory in 2019 continued the BJP’s hold on the seat.
• 1999: Bijoy Krishna Handique from INC with 48.31% of the votes.
• 2004: Bijoy Krishna Handique from INC with 33.54% of the votes.
• 2009: Bijoy Krishna Handique from INC with 47.46% of the votes.
• 2014: Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from BJP with 49.01% of the votes.
• 2019: Topon Kumar Gogoi from BJP with 51.35% of the votes.
Kaziranga Parliamentary seat has Kaliabor, Barhampur, Binnakandi, Hojai, Lumding, Golaghat, Dergaon, Khumtai Assembly constituencies which belongs to BJP and AGP, an ally of BJP.
Congress has fielded Roselina Tirkey from the seat. She is a former one-time MLA from Sarupathar Assembly constituency.
BJP has named former LS MP from Jorhat and current Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa as its candidate from the seat.
