“All we need is a green signal; rest we will handle”: Pradyot Debbarma on Bangladesh Embankment at Tripura Border

Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) staged a major protest on Monday at the Bangladesh border in Belonia, South Tripura, over a controversial embankment built by Bangladesh. Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma supported the protest, saying youth were ready to act if given a green signal.

The protest erupted over a high-rise embankment constructed by Bangladesh next to the Muhari river, close to the zero line, which raised serious concerns among local villagers about possible flooding during the upcoming monsoon season.

Carrying the Indian tricolour and party flags, YTF protesters tried to march toward the embankment site but security forces, including Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, stopped them. Authorities cited the risk of escalating tensions in the sensitive border region, as local residents had already expressed fears that the embankment could worsen flooding on the Indian side.

Extending full support to the protest, Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Debbarma took to X and wrote, “Today at Belonia, Tripura, thousands of our Warriors were stopped by the BSF, otherwise the illegal construction by Bangladesh would have been demolished. These are the youth of our Tiprasa. All we need is a green signal; rest we will handle!”

During the protest, YTF members raised strong anti-Bangladesh slogans and trampled posters of Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government. Yunus recently stirred controversy with comments made in China, describing Northeast India as “landlocked” and portraying Bangladesh as its “gateway to the sea” while seeking Chinese investment.

After a round of negotiations, security officials allowed a YTF delegation, including state president Suraj Debbarma and TTAADC South Zone chairman David Murasingh, to visit the border area. They inspected the embankment site and held a symbolic protest.

Speaking to the media, YTF president Suraj Debbarma accused the Bangladesh government of violating international border norms by constructing the embankment dangerously close to Indian territory. “As indigenous citizens of India, it is our right and duty to protect our land and borders,” Debbarma said firmly. He also questioned why the Government of India had not yet taken strong action against Bangladesh’s activities.

Suraj Debbarma warned that Tipra Motha’s “warriors of Maharaja” referring to the party’s founder and royal scion Pradyot Debbarma would not tolerate any form of encroachment. He further threatened that if Bangladesh tried to take even an inch of India’s land, Tipra Motha would intensify its demand for a “Greater Tipraland,” including reclaiming areas like the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Cox’s Bazar, historically part of the erstwhile princely state of Tripura before Partition.

Meanwhile, local villagers echoed the concerns raised by YTF and urged Indian authorities to build a protective embankment on the Indian side to prevent flooding.
