Alarming: Tripura reports 200 HIV/AIDS cases a month, of 5,330 cases till Jan, 558 are students

The number of cases of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) are on the rise in Tripura. The state has reported a total of 5,330 cases till January this year of which 558 are students. The has been reporting an average 150 to 200 new HIV/AIDS infections per month, which is alarming, said Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today.

Addressing a sansitization programme on HIV/AIDS, CM Saha expressed his concern over the alarming rise of infections in the state, particularly among students and youths.

Revealing the numbers, CM Saha said that out of the 5,330 cases of HIV/AIDS reported till January, 1,033 are women, 4,295 are men and 558 are students.

CM Saha said that the cases of the infections are rising among students and youths due to the increasing trend of intravenous drug use.

Drawing attention to a poignant tale about a student in South Tripura who became addicted to drugs, CM Saha emphasized the critical need of intervention and recovery initiatives.

He emphasized the collective endeavour of northeastern states and the nation in combating drug abuse and striving for a drug-free society.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha urged the principals of colleges, headmasters and teachers of schools to vigilantly monitor the situation and emphasized the role of clubs, societal organizations, and groups in raising awareness against drug abuse.

He has called for collective vigilance to protect children from falling prey to drug menaces.

He has also said that the State government is planning to establish eight drug de-addiction centres across eight districts to provide support to affected youths.
