While no previous incidents involving the leopard were noted, its injury raised significant public concern.
The Office of the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Aizawl Wildlife Division, has called on residents to support the conservation of scheduled animals under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. This appeal follows a tragic incident involving a leopard died after it was found with injuries on 17 January 2025, in Dawrpui The injured feline was rushed to a local veterinary clinic but sadly did not survive. While no previous incidents involving the leopard were noted, its injury raised significant public concern. Residents suspect it was the same animal previously seen in the area.
Leopards are among the most widespread small wild cats in India, known for their adaptability. However, their frequent movement into urban areas highlights the growing need for coexistence between wildlife and human communities.
In response, the Aizawl Wildlife Division emphasised the importance of protecting wildlife, reminding citizens that violations of the Wildlife (Protection) Act carry severe legal consequences. The Division also encouraged residents to report any wildlife-related damages to the nearest Forest Office, assuring that compensation is available if proper documentation is filed.
The Division urged the public to remain vigilant and foster an environment that ensures the safety of both wildlife and local communities. This incident serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to conserve biodiversity and maintain harmony with nature.
