Aizawl Municipality To Conduct Surprise Inspections in Restaurants, Hotels, and Hostels

Businesses found not adhering to the guidelines will have until the end of November to rectify their issues.
The Committee on Regulations for Restaurants, Hotels, and Hostels of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation will inspect restaurants, hotels, eateries and even hostels to see if the food that is being served is safe and hygienic and food safety standards are being followed, and if they have the necessary licences to run food businesses.
In a press conference today, AMC Corporator and Committee Chairman Pu Rosiamngheta said, “We believe that taking action, even in small ways, can make a difference, which is why this committee was established. We have received reports indicating that cleanliness standards for food items are not meeting expectations. We want to assure you that our primary focus is to address matters within the Municipal Council’s purview. We believe this is the right time to implement the AMC regulations, and we are committed to serving the welfare of the community to the best of our abilities.”
Surprise inspections will begin in the second week of November. Businesses found not adhering to the guidelines will have until the end of November to rectify their issues. Failure to comply may result in fines and the cancellation of their licenses.
Inspections will verify whether restaurants, hotels, and hostels have completed the necessary registration with the AMC and whether that registration remains valid. Additional checks will focus on food safety practices and waste segregation methods. The AMC has also reminded business owners to display their license numbers on signboards.
The restaurant and cafe sector has seen significant growth recently, but the AMC has noticed that many owners, regardless of size, often overlook essential steps to operate their businesses legally.
Currently, there are 148 hotels and hostels and 819 tea stalls and restaurants registered with the AMC.
