Aizawl Bans Firecrackers in New Year Celebrations for Clean Air

Surprise checks on shops, warehouses, and transport services have led to the seizure of firecrackers worth Rs 23.38 lakh.
Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is welcoming New Year without its traditional midnight fireworks display. In a progressive step towards reducing air pollution, the state government, in collaboration with the Police Department and civil society organisations, has imposed a strict ban on firecrackers.
In previous years, fireworks illuminated Aizawl’s skies, marking a jubilant start to the year. However, growing concerns over air pollution and health hazards have prompted this decisive action. Firecrackers release harmful pollutants that degrade air quality and pose significant risks to public health. To ensure compliance, the government has introduced stringent penalties under BNS Section 223. Violators could face a jail term of up to one year, a fine of Rs 5,000, or both.
To enforce the ban, authorities are employing drones for city-wide surveillance. Additionally, awareness campaigns on social media, featuring hashtags like #SayNoToFirecrackers and #PollutionFree, aim to educate the public on the environmental benefits of avoiding firecrackers.
Law enforcement has been proactive in the lead-up to the celebrations. Surprise checks on shops, warehouses, and transport services have led to the seizure of firecrackers worth Rs 23.38 lakh. A total of 11 cases have been filed, and 14 individuals are in custody, reflecting a serious commitment to ensuring compliance.
While similar bans have been attempted in the past, they were often disregarded. This year, however, the government, alongside NGOs, is striving to create lasting awareness and enforce the ban rigorously.
Public reaction remains mixed. Social media discussions indicate resistance to the ban, with some questioning its practicality and effectiveness. Whether Aizawl will truly embrace an eco-friendly New Year will become apparent as the clock strikes midnight. In the days ahead, the government’s resolve in enforcing the ban will be closely scrutinised.
