Over the next decade, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to transform the world, potentially making human involvement unnecessary “for most things.” This bold prediction comes from Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist, who shared his insights during an interview with comedian Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s The Tonight Show in February.

Gates believes that expertise, which remains relatively scarce today, will soon become universally accessible through AI. Presently, we still depend on skilled professionals, like exceptional doctors or teachers. However, Gates envisions a future where AI delivers great medical advice and high-quality tutoring at no cost. This concept of “free intelligence” will revolutionize how people access information and services.

In a separate interview with Arthur Brooks, a Harvard University professor and happiness expert, Gates highlighted that the rapid development of AI-powered technologies would touch nearly every aspect of our lives. From improved medical diagnoses to accessible virtual assistants and educational tools, AI will bring transformative changes.

“It’s very profound and even a little bit scary — because it’s happening very quickly, and there is no upper bound,” Gates admitted to Brooks.

The rise of AI has sparked debates about how humans will fit into an increasingly automated world. Some experts argue that AI will enhance human productivity rather than replace it, fostering economic growth and creating new jobs. However, others, like Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, have a more cautious outlook.

In his 2023 book The Coming Wave, Suleyman stated that advanced technologies would temporarily augment human intelligence but ultimately replace many forms of labour. He cautioned that the rapid adoption of AI could significantly disrupt the workforce, fundamentally changing the nature of most jobs.

According to Suleyman, AI’s impact on industries will be “hugely destabilizing” as automation reshapes how tasks are performed. Jobs that involve creativity, critical thinking, and human interaction may remain, but those focused on routine processes could be rendered obsolete.

While Gates remains optimistic about AI’s potential, he acknowledges the legitimate concerns surrounding its development. He envisions AI contributing to breakthroughs in treating deadly diseases, tackling climate change, and providing high-quality education worldwide. Yet, he also admits that the speed of AI’s advancement is unsettling.

One major issue is the current flaws in AI systems, which can be error-prone and susceptible to spreading misinformation. Gates pointed out that while AI can revolutionize various fields, it must be deployed responsibly to minimize risks.

Despite these challenges, Gates sees an “AI-centric” future as an exciting prospect for young innovators. In September 2024, he told CNBC Make It that if he were to start a new business, it would focus on AI. Gates believes that new startups have a unique opportunity to explore AI’s frontiers with fresh perspectives, encouraging young entrepreneurs to seize this moment.

Gates’ interest in AI dates back nearly a decade when he foresaw the technology’s transformative potential. Speaking at a 2017 event at Columbia University alongside Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, Gates identified AI as the field he would pursue if he were starting anew. He pointed to the remarkable achievement of Google’s DeepMind AI lab, which developed a program capable of defeating human champions at the board game Go.

Even then, Gates acknowledged that AI development was advancing faster than anticipated. In 2023, he challenged OpenAI to create a model that could achieve top scores on a high school AP Biology exam, expecting it to take two or three years. To his surprise, the goal was met within a few months. He described the accomplishment as “the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface [in 1980].”

Despite his enthusiasm for AI, Gates believes some aspects of human life will remain beyond its reach. During his conversation with Fallon, he noted that people might not want to watch machines playing baseball or performing activities meant for human enjoyment. “There will be some things we reserve for ourselves,” Gates said.

Nonetheless, he predicts that manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture will eventually become “solved problems” through AI automation. The challenge lies in balancing progress with preserving jobs and social stability.

As AI technology advances at an unprecedented pace, Gates’ perspective serves as both a caution and an inspiration. On the one hand, AI holds the promise of solving global challenges, from healthcare to climate change. On the other, its rapid adoption could lead to social disruption and economic displacement.

Gates’ message is clear: those who embrace and innovate with AI will lead the future, but the world must remain vigilant about the societal impacts of this revolutionary technology. As humanity ventures into an AI-driven era, balancing progress with ethical considerations will be crucial to ensuring that technology truly serves the greater good.
