Ahead of Monsoons, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Directs Activation of VDMCs, Calls for Immediate Disaster Drills

CM Sangma called for proactive planning, including a thorough review of the Disaster Emergency Helpline and ensuring full activation of VDMCs.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma convened a high-level meeting with all Deputy Commissioners and officials from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to assess the state’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.

Emphasizing the need for a swift, coordinated disaster response system, the Chief Minister directed all DCs to hold meetings with their respective Block Disaster Management Committees (BDMCs). These are to be followed by sessions with Village Disaster Management Committees (VDMCs) and Village Executive Committees (VECs).

CM Sangma called for proactive planning, including a thorough review of the Disaster Emergency Helpline and ensuring full activation of VDMCs via the VECs across districts. He instructed districts yet to conduct disaster preparedness drills to carry them out promptly.

In addition, departments have been tasked with drafting specific disaster mitigation guidelines. The CM also stressed the importance of analyzing soil composition and water body data to pinpoint flood- and landslide-prone zones.

These directives form part of the government’s broader mission to strengthen grassroots resilience and minimize risks during the monsoon.
