Tripura Tribal Women Protest: The women blocked the crucial Jatanbari–Tirthamukh road, bringing traffic to a halt.
Ahead of Poila Boisakh, the Bengali New Year that falls on April 14-15, tribal women from Rambhadra village in the remote Dhalai district of Tripura staged a road blockade on Tuesday, protesting the non-payment of MGNREGA wages for the past four months.
The women blocked the crucial Jatanbari–Tirthamukh road, bringing traffic to a halt and leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides. The protest held just days before the Bengali New Year celebrations, reflected the mounting frustration over delayed wages meant to be received before the Poush Sankranti fair an important annual religious event in nearby Tirthamukh.
Despite appeals from local officials, the women remained firm in their agitation. It was only after over an hour of negotiation and assurance that the issue had been raised with the District Magistrate that the protesters agreed to lift the blockade.
Officials promised that the pending payments processed centrally through direct bank transfers would be cleared within three days. However, the women warned of a larger protest if the deadline was not met, placing responsibility on the government for any further unrest.
This incident underscores the growing dissatisfaction in rural Tripura over delayed MGNREGA payments, particularly during culturally significant times when financial support is most needed by vulnerable communities.
