After Sumi, Tarkik And Bishal, Another Brother Duo Dupes People of Assam’s Khetri of Crores

How much trust is too much? Should promises of high returns blind us to the red flags? Is duping people over profit becoming a booming business?
Once again, a shocking trading scam has come to light in Assam, this time involving two brothers, Sagar Kalita and Jitu Kalita, who allegedly duped people over more than Rs 1 crore in Assam’s Khetri.
Operating under the company name Unnati Trading Company, the duo had collected large sums with the promise of profitable returns to the investors. But when the promised deadline passed and the money wasn’t returned, furious investors reached the Khetri police station in Sonapur, demanding action. Chaos erupted as people accused the brothers of betrayal and financial fraud and deceit.
This fresh incident mirrors a much larger online trading scam that had previously rocked Assam. The kingpin of that multi-crore racket, Bishal Phukan, along with popular social media influencer Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik Borah, was accused of scamming investors through fake trading schemes. The trio was arrested in September but Bishal and Tarkik were granted bail after 6 months and later on last month Sumi was also granted bail.
What’s worrying is not just the scams themselves, but the pattern: people fall prey, culprits get arrested, and then they walk free on bail. Is there no fear left in defrauding the public? Does the laws need more teeth?
As such scams continue to emerge, people should be aware and be safe in trusting people and investing.
