CM said that the state government will significantly step up surveillance by installing at least a thousand CCTV cameras across major tourist locations.
Rattled by the Indore tourist couple’s tragedy and to ensure safety of tourists visiting the state, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday announced that the state government will significantly step up surveillance by installing at least a thousand CCTV cameras across major tourist locations.
“We are prioritising this investment (on CCTVs) because public safety is non-negotiable. While not all surveillance systems currently fall under state control, we will make additional installations wherever required and adopt advanced technologies to strengthen our monitoring capabilities,” the CM said.
Calling the incident where the tourist couple from Indore, Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered and his decomposed body was found on June 2, nine days after he and his wife Sonam had gone missing, “heartbreaking and unprecedented,” Conrad Sangma said the government is treating the case with utmost seriousness and assured the victim’s family that justice will be ensured.
“This is an extremely sad and shocking incident. It has shaken not just the government but the entire state. On behalf of the government and the people of Meghalaya, I offer my deepest condolences to the family. We are doing everything possible to trace the missing husband and uncover the truth,” said the Chief Minister.
He said the government is already taking all necessary steps and working closely with law enforcement. “The police are actively investigating every angle. We will leave no stone unturned. The facts will emerge, and strict action will follow,” Conrad Sangma stated.
Referring to the incident as the first of its kind in Meghalaya, CM Conrad Sangma stated, “This kind of tragic event has never occurred in our state before. In past years, there were a few small incidents, but nothing of this nature. Everyone is shocked and concerned.”
“Shillong has always been known as a tourist-friendly destination, and thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world continue to visit us every year. This incident deeply saddens us and has made us even more determined to protect those who come here,” he stated.
He said it is still too early to establish the full sequence of events. “Right now, we don’t have all the answers. But the government is already taking every necessary action. Let the investigation continue and the facts come out,” he said.
He also said that there are challenges but expressed confidence in overcoming them. “We are fully committed to supporting the family, ensuring justice, and restoring confidence among tourists. This is a difficult time, but we will act strongly and decisively,” Conrad Sangma added.
