In a major development, residents of the Harijan Colony in Shillong have sought the urgent attention of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma demanding adequate security in the area in view of threats by a banned militant group to target and eliminate members of the community residing there.

The Harijan Panchayat Committee in its letter to the chief minister yesterday said that the rebel group has threatened to kill residents of the colony in an alleged bid to stop them from challenging the notices issued to them by the Shillong Municipal Board and the urban affairs department.

The committee has also told Chief Minister Sangma in its letter that the rebel group was misleading the people with false propaganda and reiterated that the residents have been living in the colony for more than 200 years.

The residents under the Harijan Panchayat Committee has also sought urgent intervention of Home Minister Amit shah.
