Police arrested Pappu Chettri alias Robert Chettri, a resident of Mawsyntai Village in Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya.

In a major breakthrough, Ri-Bhoi Police on June 3, captured the second and final fugitive in a high-stakes manhunt that lasted over six months. With crucial support from North Garo Hills Police, the team tracked down the escapee in Goalpara district of Assam, where he had been hiding under a fake identity.

Police arrested Pappu Chettri alias Robert Chettri, a resident of Mawsyntai Village in Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya. He had escaped from police custody on November 15, 2024, while being treated at Nongpoh Civil Hospital. Pappu Chettri was facing trial in a serious case involving kidnapping and rape. After his arrest yesterday, he will be brought back today and produced before the Nongpoh court.

This arrest comes just days after police nabbed the first escapee, Sunil Das from Dudhnoi, Goalpara district, Assam, on May 29. Sunil Das had already completed a sentence in an earlier case but was serving life imprisonment under the POCSO Act when he fled custody along with Chettri. He has since been sent back to jail.

Both fugitives had escaped together from Nongpoh Civil Hospital on November 15, 2024, and remained underground for months, using fake identities and moving cautiously to avoid detection.
