Amidst the wide-spread demand for repealing of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the entire Northeast, the Manipur government on Monday issued a notification extending AFSPA in the state for a period of one year.
In the notification, the Governor has given ex-post facto approval to declare the entire state, excluding the Imphal Municipal areas, as “disturbed” with retrospective effect from December 1, 2021, for a period of one year.

The official order was issued by H. Gyan Prakash, special secretary. Under the provision, central forces will be deployed to aid the civil administration. Earlier, the disturbed areas order of the Manipur government expired on December 31, 2021.
It needs to be mentioned here that the law and order situation in poll bound Manipur has been in a state of turmoil. In a time frame of just one month, three people have been shot dead in suspected pre-poll related violence.

The latest incident was reported on Sunday, as 2 close aides of Agriculture Minister O Lukhoi Singh were gunned down by unidentified miscreants.
Meanwhile reacting on the development Human Right and prominent Anti-AFSPA activist, Babloo Loitongbam said that it is unfortunate that the state has extended AFSPA in Manipur, despite its claim that the Law and Order situation has improved significantly
