800-1000 New IRB Recruits to Undergo Special Commando Training in Manipur

Construction and maintenance of the battalion headquarters for the 10th IRB at Nungba and the 11th IRB at Saivom are also underway.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh inspected the Manipur Police Firing Range at Wairi Pangei, Imphal, and reviewed the ongoing construction of temporary barracks on Sunday. These barracks will host around 800 to 1,000 new recruits from the 10th and 11th Indian Reserve Battalions (IRB) as they undergo specialised commando training to form elite teams prepared to tackle law and order challenges in the state.

The recruits recently passed out from the highly acclaimed Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, Dergaon in Assam, with the 10th and 11th IRB raised specifically for highway protection. The Chief Minister said that their disciplined approach and the current state of affairs in Manipur necessitated the creation of these barracks.

He further highlighted the importance of equipping police personnel with modern tools to enhance their operational readiness. “The government is in the process of procuring essential equipment such as riot guns and helmets to better handle mob violence,” he said. The Chief Minister stressed that such upgrades are critical, given that anti-social elements often demoralise police officers by threatening them during crowd control operations.

The Chief Minister also called for refresher training for all state police personnel to maintain their fitness and efficiency, stating that the police are the backbone of society and governance. Boosting their morale and ensuring they are well-prepared is a priority for the government, he added.

Construction and maintenance of the battalion headquarters for the 10th IRB at Nungba and the 11th IRB at Saivom are also underway.

In another appeal, the Chief Minister urged parents and guardians of the new recruits to refrain from using political influence to secure specific postings. “Allow the young recruits to serve their state and nation under the government’s transfer and posting policy,” he said.

On the issue of displaced families still residing in relief camps at educational institutions, the Chief Minister assured that they would soon be relocated to prefabricated houses under construction at Phubala and other areas.
