71 Assam tea estates announce 20% Durga puja bonus for its workers

In some good news for the hundreds of tea garden workers ahead of Durga Puja, 71 tea estates in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam have announced a 20 per cent bonus for its workers.
Assam has a total of 803 big tea estates, with 705 of them in the Brahmaputra Valley and 98 in the Barak Valley. The tea gardens in the Brahmaputra valley are linked to the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, which is the biggest trade union for tea workers in the country and has 4.35 lakh members.
ACMS general secretary Rupesh Gowala announced that eight major tea groups with multiple tea gardens have already shared the bonus amount for their workers. All the tea gardens have agreed to pay the maximum bonus, which is 20% of the workers’ wages. Earlier, ACMS had requested the tea industry to declare the bonus amount at least three weeks before Puja, which falls on October 20.
The big tea companies that have declared their Puja bonus are Gillanders Arbuthnot (6 tea estates), Rossell India (6 tea estates), Dhunseri (12 tea estates), MK Shah Exports (14 tea estates), Assam Company India Limited (14 tea estates), Laxmi tea company (13 tea estates), Joktoli Tea Company (4 tea estates), and Asian Tea and Exports Limited (2 tea estates).
