6th Schedule in Meghalaya school textbooks soon: Edu minister Rakkam Sangma

Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma today informed that the state government is planning to introduce Sixth Schedule in secondary level textbooks and basic laws of the state.
Sangma said that the government will soon introduce an additional subject to be included in schools of the state.
He said, “We will include about our culture, about our tradition, nature, what we eat, what we speak, the geography of the state. Whoever comes from outside to study in Meghalaya they should read about our culture, our nature, our food system, our living system and they can go back. Every student must study about some basic law in the school and also about Sixth Schedule.”
The minister further said that the government has directed the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education to constitute a scrutiny committee to scrutinize English, Science and Mathematics subject NCERT books before adapting it into the state syllabus.
Speaking to media in Shillong, Sangma said, “The cabinet has approved the proposal of education department to adapt with the modification of local content in the NCERT edited textbook in all the core subject like English, Maths, Science and Social Science from class 6 onwards. So this is the major milestone decision of the government in order to bring the standard to match rest of the country.”
“In 2024, the subjects like English, Maths and Science can be adapted and it will be followed in all the schools of the state under the Meghalaya state board. But in the elementary stage we will be having in three different languages that is English, Khasi and Garo. Therefore, within 5 to 6 months, the state is going to have its own state curriculum framework,” Sangma added.
