6 from Northeast conferred Padma Shri award for 2024

Nagaland's Sano Vamuzo and Meghalaya's Dr. Sangthankima were conferred the Padma Shri for their distinguished service in the field of social work.
Proud moment for the Northeastern region of India. 6 persons from the region were conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award for the year 2024 for their excellent contribution in the fields of social work, public affairs, art and culture among others.
Six persons who have received the award are Mizoram’s Dr. Sangthankima, Nagaland’s Sano Vamuzo, Sikkim’s Jordan Lepcha, Parbati Baruah of Assam, Tripura’s Smriti Rekha Chakma and Meghalaya’s Kong Silbi Passah.
They received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held with grandeur in Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan yesterday.
Sano Vamuzo and Dr. Sangthankima were conferred the Padma Shri for their distinguished service in the field of social work.
Dr. Sangthankima contributed towards the welfare of orphans, mental health patients and destitute people.
Jordan Lepcha was given the award for his diligent efforts in preserving the cultural heritage of the Lepcha tribe in Sikkim through weaving traditional hats and crafting bamboo for the past 25 years.
Kong Silbi Passah and Eminent weaver Smriti Rekha Chakma were given the award for their contribution in the field of art.
Parbati Barua, India’s first female elephant mahout has received the award in recognition of her exceptional work work in the field of social work and animal welfare. She started taming the wild tuskers at the age of 14 to overcome stereotypes.
Chief Ministers of the region took to X and congratulated the recipients of the Padma Shri award.
