5 Northeast States In List of Top 10 States of India with Highest Literacy Rate

The survey considers individuals aged seven years and above from both rural and urban areas across the country.

In a major achievement for the Northeastern region, five states from the Northeast have featured in the list of the top ten most literate states and union territories in India. The data comes from the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The survey considers individuals aged seven years and above from both rural and urban areas across the country.

Mizoram has topped the national literacy chart with an outstanding literacy rate of 98.2%. Lakshadweep follows with 97.3%, but Northeast India continues to dominate the list. Nagaland has secured 95.7%, taking the second spot among northeastern states. Meghalaya has achieved 94.2%, placing it third in the region, followed by Tripura with 93.7%. Manipur completes the list of high-performing northeastern states with a literacy rate of 92%.

Here are the five Northeast states featured in the top ten:

Mizoram – 98.2%

Nagaland – 95.7%

Meghalaya – 94.2%

Tripura – 93.7%

Manipur – 92%

Kerala, Chandigarh, Goa, and Puducherry are also among the other regions that made it to the top ten nationally. The overall literacy rate of India for the 2023–24 period stands at 80.9%. This includes both male and female populations aged seven and above across all rural and urban areas.
