The incident took place last evening at Sidhai Mohanpur village in the district.

At least four Tripura police personnel were injured and several police vehicles damaged when they came under attack while returning after an operation destroying thousands of cannabis plants.

The police were attacked with bricks and stones by a group of people in West Tripura.

The incident took place last evening at Sidhai Mohanpur village in the district.

A case has been registered and a probe started to identify the attackers. Speaking to the media, West Tripura SP Kiran Kumar said, “The state police along with other security agencies has launched a massive crackdown on illegal cannabis plantation in the state. Taking advantage of the situation, a group of locals attacked the police and TSR team on their way back after destroying the cannabis and threw bricks at them, injuring a few.”

Kumar appealed to the public to cooperate with Tripura police for the betterment of the society instead of resisting the police.

Since the BJP government came to power in 2018, it has launched a massive crackdown on drugs and the illegal drug trade.

However, incumbent Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha admitted a rise in drug-related activities recently and said drug peddlers were using Tripura as a corridor of the drug trade whilst stressing that the state topped the list in the Northeast region in illegal drug seizure and destruction.
