The drownings follow escalating tensions between CNDF and CDF-Hualngoram, with armed clashes beginning on July 3

In a tragic development along the India–Myanmar border, four Myanmar nationals and members of the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) drowned while attempting to cross the Tiau River into Mizoram. The incident occurred near Saikhumphai hamlet in Champhai district after an assault on their camp by the rival Chin National Army (CNA).

According to the Young Mizo Association (YMA) leaders from Vaphai village, three CNDF members drowned on Sunday night while trying to swim across the river. A fourth body was recovered on Monday morning. Search and recovery operations have been launched by YMA volunteers from Vaphai, Farkawn, and nearby areas.

The drownings follow escalating tensions between CNDF and CDF-Hualngoram, with armed clashes beginning on July 3. These confrontations have already claimed the lives of two CDF-Hualngoram members and left several others injured. Some of the critically wounded have been brought to Zokhawthar village in Mizoram for treatment.

Amid the turmoil, Mizoram has once again opened its arms to fleeing civilians from Myanmar’s Chin State. Nearly 4,000 refugees are currently sheltering in the state—over 3,000 at the Indo-Myanmar border trade centre in Zokhawthar and about 800 more in Vaphai village and Saikhumphai.

Despite tensions, no fresh gunfire has been reported as of yesterday.
