36 People Including Army Personnel killed in Nature’s Fury in NE since May 29. Over 6 Lakh People Affected in the 8 NE States. Met Department Predicts More Rainfall

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeastern states till Tuesday.

Incessant rainfall and landslides continue to batter the eight Northeastern States. Nature’s fury since May 29 claimed the lives of at least 36 people including 3 Army men. Around 6 lakh people are affected in the region in the last 84 hours

10 people including a pregnant woman and children died in Arunachal and 10 more people, including children died in Assam due to the brutal floods and landslides. The death toll in Meghalaya stands at 6, four people have died in Mizoram, 2 in Tripura, 1 in Nagaland and 3 in Sikkim. There have been no reports of casualties from Manipur yet.

The worst affected state in the North East is Assam where around 4 lakh people have been affected by the flood waters in Lakhimpur, Silchar, South Salmara, Kaziranga and Sribhumi and 10 other districts.Due to incessant rainfall, rising water levels have submerged many roads and railway tracks across the Barak Valley. As a result, several trains have been cancelled. Both up and down services on the Dullabcherra-Guwahati route have been cancelled, along with the Silchar-Naharlagun and Badarpur-Dullabcherra trains.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the worst affected district of Lakhimpur in Northern Assam and took stock of the flood situation. He was accompanied by few of his Cabinet Colleagues. On Tuesday, the Chief Minister will be visitng Silchar in Barak valley.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the worst affected areas are Namsai, Changlang and West Kameng. In Upper Subansiri district, flash floods caused by the overflowing Sigin River inundated large parts of Daporijo town, damaging over 117 houses and public infrastructure. District officials, led by Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo, are assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts. Residents in the worst-affected areas—Polo Colony, Sigin Colony, Bukpen Colony, and Forest Colony—have been advised to relocate immediately.

In West Kameng district, road connectivity has been severely disrupted. Landslides near Jamiri on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang (BCT) road stranded hundreds, while major blockades were reported in Jyoti Nagar, Dirang, Padma, and Durga Mandir. A landslide in Bomdila’s Petaling Colony also destroyed roads and culverts, although no casualties were reported.

District Disaster Management Officer Mindu Yangzom confirmed that Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams have been deployed, though continuous rainfall is slowing progress in restoration works.

In Shi Yomi district, the strategic town of Mechuka near the Indo-China border has been completely cut off after the connecting road was washed away. Restoration work is underway on a war footing.

Additional landslides have been reported from Kurung Kumey, Kamle, and Lower Subansiri districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall in the coming days due to a depression over Bangladesh, prompting the state administration to place all relevant departments on high alert.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu is personally overseeing relief and rescue operations and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin who died due to the floods and landslides.

In Mizoram  Serchip, Kolasib, Aizawl and Lunglei are the worst affected areas in the state. Schools in all 11 districts of Mizoram remains shut on Monday.

In Sikkim its whole of North Sikkim that is bearing the brunt of nature’s fury. A landslide took place Sunday evening at Chatten which damaged nearby hanitats.3 bodies have been recovered so far which includes army personnel. The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained. More people are feared trapped under the debris.

Over 1400 stranded tourists are being evacuated in North Sikkim.Stranded tourists in Lachung are now being actively evacuated through a coordinated effort involving the police, local residents, forest personnel and the Lachung Hotel Association. The evacuation operation is being led on the ground by Gyatso Lachungpa, president of the Lachung Hotel Association, with support from the local administration.

Responding swiftly to the situation, members of the Lachungpa community, particularly hotel owners, have taken personal responsibility for the safe evacuation of visitors. Locals are not only assisting with logistics but also physically carrying luggage and helping children navigate the terrain, ensuring no one is left behind.

In Tripura the worst affected areas are West and North Tripura, Unakoti and Dhalai districts.

Red Alert has been issued in all districts, indicating a high likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in some places today.

Agartala has so far received 140 mm of rainfall, while Kailashahar in Unakoti district recorded 192.2 mm.

A total of 14 rescue teams have been deployed at various locations in West Tripura and Unakoti districts.

In West Tripura, 11 rescue teams have been deployed, including 2 from NDRF, 3 from SDRF, 1 each from Assam Rifles, Fire & Emergency Services, 4 from Civil Defence, Aapda Mitra, Bharat Scouts and Guides, and others in Unakoti district.

Officials stated that a total of 60 relief camps—48 in West Tripura, 3 in Khowai, 3 in Unakoti, and 6 in North Tripura—have been opened across the affected districts, sheltering around 2,800 families and approximately 10,600 inmates.

Several roads were temporarily blocked due to fallen trees and landslides in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, and West Tripura districts. Swift action by community volunteers, SDRF, Forest Department, PWD, and Quick Response Teams led to the clearance of many routes. According to preliminary reports, a total of 201 houses were damaged, primarily in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, and North Tripura districts. A detailed damage assessment is underway.

No relief seems to be in near sight as the India Meteorological Department has predicted more precipitation for the region in the next 24 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeastern states till Tuesday. The Meteorological Department is its weather bulletin stated, that Light to moderate rainfall at most places is likely to continue over northeast India during next 7 days with heavy rainfall during next 5 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam and Meghalaya until June 3 and in Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura today.

IMD has predicted thunderstorm across the region and Guwahati, Itanagar, Aizawl and Kohima are expected to experience strong thunderstorm later in the day today.

The Northeastern region is witnessing heavy downpour due to a deep depression over Bay of Bengal and the Southwest Monsoon which has hit the region 10 days ahead of the actual onset date.
