A heist turned into a nightmare for three thieves in Kanpur who couldn't drive off in a van that they had stolen as none of them knew how to drive.

This is the story of three boys, two of them studying in college, who came together to steal a Maruti van in Kanpur’s Dabauli area in order to make a quick buck. They confidently proceeded with their daring heist and managed to get their hands on the vehicle with no qualms. But then, they found themselves in unfamiliar territory.

None of the three knew how to drive a car.

Stumped but not the ones to give up, the three decided to push the vehicle. And they did just that for a good 10 kilometres in the dead of the night. The arduous trek took a toll and their bodies gave up. The tired men decided to abandon the vehicle. The thieves removed the car’s number plate, hid it in a deserted place, and fled.

Police on Tuesday arrested the three thieves, identified as Satyam Kumar, Aman Gautam and Amit Verma. While Satyam is pursuing B.Tech from an engineering college in Maharajpur, Aman is a B.Com final-year student from DBS College. Amit is employed.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhej Narayan Singh said the three accused had stolen the vehicle from the Dabauli area on May 7.

“These people had stolen the van but none of them knew how to drive. So, they pushed the van for 10 kilometres from Dabauli to Kalyanpur, removed its number plate and hid it in a deserted place. No one knew how to drive the vehicle but after stealing it, they thought they would sell it,” the ACP said.

The ACP said the entire robbery was planned by Amit. He also said there was a plan to sell the stolen vehicles through a website which was being made by Satyam. “Satyam was making a website to sell stolen vehicles. His plan was if the vehicles were not sold in the market, he would sell them through the website,” the ACP further said.
