Mehtab Chandee Sangma, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and NPP’s winning candidate for the Gambegre seat created history today on three counts. First this was her debut in electoral politics and she registered a convincing win, second, this is the first time that NPP managed to win the Gambegre seat. It had contested the seat at least four times in the past but lost, finishing third or fourth, and finally, this is the first time since 1972 that any party in Meghalaya Assembly managed to bag 32 seats in the 60-member state Assembly.
“Gambegre has been a tough constituency in the Garo Hills and in Meghalaya it is among the 2-3 toughest seats. We never won this seat in the last four terms. Our candidates have finished third or fourth. Now we are happy that we will be able to work for the development of the people,” Conrad Sangma told Northeast Live.
On his wife’s win taking the party’s tally to 32, CM Sangma said, “Now we have 32 seats in the Assembly. It is a comfortable number. This has happened just once when APHLC had formed the first government in 1972. It is a comfortable number and also the highest number that any party has in the Meghalaya Assembly since 1972”.
Chandee, a medical professional, who contested the election for the first time, won the seat defeating political veterans like state BJP Vice President Bernard Marak, Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak, Trinamool Congress candidate Sadhiarani M. Sangma and independent candidates Sengkrabirth Marak and Jerry A. Sangma.
This win of NPP dealth a big blow to Congress who won the seat twice in 2018 and 2023. For TMC’s Sadhiarani M. Sangma, wife of three-time former Rangsakona MLA Zenith Sangma, it is a heart break for the third time in a row. She had contested from this seat in 2018 and 2023 too, but lost.
In this bypoll, she lost the seat by 4594 votes. She secured 8084 votes.
Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak lost the seat by 4983 votes. He secured 7695 votes.
BJP’s Bernard Marak secured only 710 votes.
