Three women from Mizoram who were engaged as housemaids and stranded in Syria for about 20 months have been rescued and brought back to the state by the Mizoram Police.

Two of the rescued women hails from the Hnahthial district and the third one is from Champhai district.

According to reports, they were illegally sent to Syria by a private placement agency in November 2022 to work as housemaids. Soon after they reached Syria on November 6, 2022, they began to face issues from their employers.

Court cases were also involved in the matter.

The Mizoram police and Indian Embassy authorities worked tirelessly to resolve the concern. After the legal cases were won, the Indian embassy in Damascus gave shelter to the three women for three weeks. On August 20, 2024, they were brought to New Delhi, and on Saturday, they were brought to Aizawl, the police officer said.

They will be sent to their villages within this week to be reunited with their families.
