Twenty five declared foreigners have passed away in Assam’s detention camps in the past nine years, Assam parliamentary affairs minister Chandramohan Patowary informed the state assembly on Monday.
He said seven detainees had died in 2019 as well as in 2018, six in 2017, four in 2016 and one in 2011, all because of illness. They were admitted to hospitals for treatment, where they died, he said.
Patowary was replying on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the home portfolio, to a starred question by Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha of the Congress.
Giving the break-up, he said that 177 detainees were lodged at Kokrajhar detention centre, 237 at Goalpara, 46 at Dibrugarh, 357 at Tezpur, 220 at Jorhat and 72 at Silchar detention centre.
