24-hour statewide general strike was called by the Joint Committee comprising of The All Manipur United Clubs Organization, United Committee Manipur and Committee of Civil Society Kangleipak.

The general strike which came into effect from the midnight of July 31 has been called to oppose any move by the Centre to extend the provision of article 371 (A) to Manipur that would provide maximum autonomy to the Nagas in the state as part of the forthcoming Naga Peace Accord.

The Joint Committee is demanding a clear stand from the government of Manipur and is insistent on having a special assembly session debate on it.
