In a significant development two noted Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) cadres fled from a HNLC camp in Bangladesh and surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang on Thursday.
During preliminary questioning, both the cadres revealed that they were misguided by HNLC Cadre, Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew to join the HNLC and together they fled to Bangladesh. They also revealed that they were asked to do menial tasks, including cultivation which, according to them was far-fetched from the cause of the organisation’s propaganda.
Disillusioned and dissatisfied with the tasks assigned to them for more than 15 months by senior cadres of HNLC, they decided to run away from Bangladesh on 20 June with an intention to return to the mainstream.
According to Police, the statements given by both the HNLC cadres have been placed at a secured location pending further necessary action
It may be noted that, Samuel Wahlang Pahsyntiew, who is said to have misguided both the youths to join HNLC, is wanted in connection with Shillong Sadar Police Station Syndicate Bus Stand IED blast case.
The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) is a militant organization operating in Meghalaya. It claims to represent the Khasi-Jaintia tribal people, and its aim is to free Meghalaya from the alleged domination of outsiders (the “Dkhars”) from the Indian mainland. The Government of India proscribed it on 16 November 2000, but later lifted the ban, before banning it again in 2019.
In March 2025, the HNLC challenged the ban imposed on it by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs before the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal. This is the first such move of its kind.
