Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has taken stock of the grim situation as incessant rainfall continues to wreak havoc across the state.

So far, 2 people have lost their lives and 3 others sustained injuries, with at least 1,023 individuals affected across 25 villages in 8 districts.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, 12 houses have been damaged and 25 key infrastructures, including roads and power lines, have suffered extensive damage due to the heavy rains.

Among the deceased, 50-year-old Klosliya Kharkongor died in a landslide in East Khasi Hills, while 35-year-old Samborlang Tariang tragically drowned amid flash floods.

The Chief Minister has directed district authorities to provide immediate relief to affected families.

Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has been instructed to restore electricity in affected areas on a war footing and deploy additional manpower to speed up the process.

With the current weather conditions expected to persist until tomorrow, the public has been urged to stay safe, take necessary precautions, and remain especially vigilant in landslide-prone and low-lying areas vulnerable to flash floods.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA) are closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating response efforts.
