As many as 150 Nagaland Police constables staged a peaceful protest outside the Police Headquarters in Kohima today, voicing their dissatisfaction over the Gauhati High Court’s decision to quash the appointments of 935 constables recruited between January 2018 and October 2019 without advertisement, along with 163 additional recruits between January 2018 and September 2020.

The protesters, holding placards with messages such as “We are victimised”, “We want justice”, and “We are victims of a corrupt system”, expressed their frustration and sense of injustice. Representatives from all 40 police units met with Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma to submit their grievances.

The Gauhati High Court’s ruling follows Justice Devashis Baruah’s September 2024 order, directing the Nagaland government to initiate a fresh, transparent recruitment process. The Supreme Court has since declined to intervene, leaving no legal recourse for the affected appointees.

DGP Rupin Sharma acknowledged the concerns of the protesting constables, stating that the police department and the Nagaland government are addressing the matter. He assured that the process of re-advertising the posts is expected to commence soon, pending final clearance from the state government.

While the protesters seek justice, the government’s decision will determine the future of the affected constables, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ensuring fair and transparent recruitment processes in the state.
