13-Day Manipur Assembly Session Begins Today, Will Kuki MLAs Attend?
First Published: 31st July, 2024 9:30 IST
Since the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year, the Assembly has convened twice and the Kuki MLAs skipped both sessions.
The Manipur Legislative Assembly is all set to begin from today. The 13-day-long Assembly session will conclude on March 5.
Several key bills such as – Revisions to the Manipur Private School Registration and Regulation Act of 2017, and the DMU Act concerning the Vice Chancellor’s selection and tenure will be tabled during the session.
In the healthcare sector, new rules under the Manipur Health Service dental regulations will be formulated.
The last session of the Manipur assembly had concluded on March 5 this year.
This Assembly session is significant as the question remains whether or not the 10 Kuki MLAs will be attending it.
Since the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year, the Assembly has convened twice and the Kuki MLAs skipped both sessions.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh had earlier stated that he had invited the 10 MLAs to attend the Assembly session. However, it is yet unclear if they would turn up for the Assembly session.
Earlier, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Satyabrata Singh said, “This is an important budget session, and all MLAs, including the Kuki MLAs, should participate to discuss all issues.”
Apart from these matter, it is also likely that the Congress will be raising the issue of violence in the state’s Jiribam district during this session. Jiribam witnessed a wave of violence after the killing of a farmer which resulted in the displacement of both the Meitei as well as the tribal communities in the district.
