High-level sources have confirmed that this meeting will focus on the final discussion of the draft report, which was previously discussed on February 10.
A High-Level Committee, led by Chairman BV Sharma, will hold a two-day meeting in Kolkata on March 18 and 19 to finalise the draft report on securing Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for 12 left-out communities of Sikkim.
High-level sources have confirmed that this meeting will focus on the final discussion of the draft report, which was previously discussed on February 10 in New Delhi. The committee is expected to submit the final report after the Kolkata meeting.
On February 11, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang reiterated his strong commitment to this cause during the 2nd meeting of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee (SSHLC) at Sikkim House in New Delhi. He stressed that securing ST status is not only a constitutional right but also crucial for preserving the cultural identity, heritage, and traditional practices of these communities.
Reaffirming his personal commitment, CM Tamang has already assured that the Sikkim Government will provide full support at every stage of the process. He called upon all stakeholders to work collectively toward achieving this historic milestone, which will positively transform the lives of the 12 left-out communities and strengthen Sikkim’s social fabric.
The upcoming Kolkata meeting is expected to be a decisive step toward resolving the long-standing demand for tribal status, which could positively impact the social and economic standing of the 12 left-out communities in Sikkim.
CM Tamang had appreciated the efforts of the SSHLC, community representatives, and experts for compiling a well-researched and comprehensive document to support the demand. The Chief Minister also thanked his Cabinet colleagues, Members of Parliament (Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha), MLAs, and Advisors for their unwavering support in pushing this initiative forward.
