12 Days After Being Kidnapped, Guwahati Cabbie Rescued From Meghalaya, 4 Arrested

The joint teams of Assam and Meghalaya Police launched an investigation leading them to West Garo Hills, where they rescued the victim from a jungle area.

Twelve days after being kidnapped, Dispur Police, in collaboration with West Garo Hills Police, has successfully rescued a taxi driver of Guwahati and apprehended four accused individuals in connection to the case.

According to reports, the victim’s wife had filed a complaint on 1st October at the Dispur Police Station stating that her husband Amit Kumar Singha, who is a cab driver has been missing since 27th September 2024.

Amit’s wife further stated that on 28th Sept she received a phone call from an unknown number wherein the caller told her that her husband had been kidnapped and the kidnappers demanded ransom money of Rs 1 Crore for safe release of her husband. The caller also threatened that if the ransom demand is not met then her husband will be killed.

The joint teams of Assam and Meghalaya Police launched an investigation leading them to West Garo Hills, where they rescued the victim from a jungle area on 2nd October and also recovered the car.

Further investigation led to the arrest of four kidnappers on Tuesday from Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts.

The arrested have been identified as Mofidul Haque, Rafiqul Hussain, Sariful Islam and Mizanur Rahman. Four others remain at large.

Further investigations are underway and the identities of all the accused persons involved in the kidnapping have been ascertained and efforts are being made to apprehend them.

It needs to be mentioned that during the investigation it was revealed that on 27th September two unknown persons booked the cab for Rs 350 at Khanapara stating that they would go to Jalukbari. On reaching Jalukbari, the said two persons told the victim that they had to urgently go to Goalpara for some family emergency and asked the victim if he would take them to Goalpara. The victim agreed to go to Goalpara for a fare of Rs. 7000. The said two persons took the vehicle to Tikri Killa on the border of Goalpara and Meghalaya.

There three more persons joined them and all five persons got into the vehicle and asked the victim to proceed ahead. After traveling for some time, all five overpowered the driver, tied his hand and legs, and put him in the rear seat and one of the accused persons drove the vehicle ahead. They were later joined by three other accused persons from West Garo Hills and the victim was kept confined in the jungle and the ransom call of Rs. 1 crore was made to the victim’s wife.
