Efforts are now underway to operationalize this plan and address the challenges posed by the influx of refugees into the district.
The ripple effect of the ongoing crisis in Manipur is being felt in Karbi Anglong, Assam, where authorities are intensifying efforts to identify and repatriate Kuki migrants. Days after announcing plans to send over 1,000 Kuki refugees back to Manipur, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang has revealed the formation of local surveillance groups to locate migrants who entered the district from Manipur.
Speaking on the matter, Ronghang said he would soon announce a deadline for Kuki migrants to vacate the district. On Thursday, Ronghang chaired a high-stakes meeting attended by SGBs (Scheduled Gaon Buras), GBs (Gaon Buras), the Kuki Students’ Organization, and prominent members of the Kuki community. The meeting focused on addressing concerns surrounding illegal settlements in the district while emphasizing the need to maintain peace and stability in light of the volatile situation in Manipur.
As part of the resolutions passed during the meeting, stakeholders agreed to establish a working committee and a task force to identify illegal migrants in Kuki-dominated areas. The task force include local leaders, circle officers, chairpersons, member secretaries, officials, and members of the Kuki Students’ Organization and the Karbi Students’ Association.
The SGBs and Gaon Buras resolved that any illegal migrants from Manipur or other regions would be deported to their respective places of origin. Efforts are now underway to operationalize this plan and address the challenges posed by the influx of refugees into the district.
