10 tigers, including 6 cubs, were found dead between the months of August and September
As many as 10 tigers had died in Nilgiris region of Tamil Nadu over the last 2 months.
10 tigers, including 6 cubs, were found dead between the months of August and September.
Following the deaths, the National Tiger Commission (NTC) conducted a field examination and consulted with Tamil Nadu’s wildlife officials to shed light on the complex dynamics of this majestic species.
The NTC said that all tigers died due to natural causes and that there is no need to hit the panic button.
The NTC’s investigation suggests that even as the recent deaths are tragic, they do not immediately indicate a crisis, and preventative measures should be take to further protect the expanding tiger population. The numbers of the tiger deaths are not alarming when compared to the overall tiger population in the area.
According to NTC’s report, all 6 tiger cubs died due to malnutrition and desertion, primarily due to the low density of prey in their habitat
Two adult tigers are believed to have died due to infighting, which is a natural occurrence in tiger populations, said NTC.
The poisoning of the other two adult tigers during an avalanche was a disturbing incident. An arrest has been made in connection with this case.
Notably, the number of tigers in the Nilgiris region has increased significantly, from 382 in 2010 to 828 in 2022.
The panel has suggested a number of actions to guarantee the welfare of this expanding tiger colony. A landscape plan with a focus on preventing any future confrontations between tigers and human settlements is being developed, as are increased monitoring efforts, strengthened informant networks to fight illicit activities, and improved monitoring operations.
