One week, three Assam women dead in three different states. Mystery surrounds the deaths of three women from Assam — Namrata Borah from Golaghat, Shivali Kashyap from Nazira and Rosmita Hojai from Dima Hasao.

First, on June 4, Namrata Borah, a law intern, originally from Golaghat but living in Guwahati died in a mysterious road accident near Nogpoh in Meghalaya. Namrata had left for Shillong past midnight with four friends – Anayatul Wadud (a youth leader of the AIUDF and son of party’s Bilasipara MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed), Mriganka Baruah, Pragya Dihingia and Gayatri Bora. The car they were travelling in met with an accident at Shangbangla near Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Namrata died while the others escaped with minor injuries. The case took a turn when reports emerged that Anayatul and Gayatri fled the accident site apparently leaving Namrata to die. Namrata’s parents alleged foul play. Namrata’s brother, Rishabhananda Bora, filed an FIR at Nongpoh Police Station, naming all four companions as suspects. The family also lodged a separate complaint at Dispur Police Station, questioning why Anayatul and Gayatri fled the scene while the others took Namrata to the hospital.

The matter became so sensitive that Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma reached out to his Meghalaya counterpart, Conrad Sangma, requesting that a senior police officer be appointed to supervise the investigation into the death of Namrata Bora.

On June 20, sixteen days after the accident, postmortem report revealed that a piece of glass was found lodged in Namrata’s head. It is still not clear if the piece of broken glass is from the car involved in the accident.

While media was still reporting the death of Namrata, another Assam woman, Rosmita Hojai from Dima Hasao was reported missing on June 5 in New Delhi where she had gone to appear for Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam. Five days later, on June 10 her decomposed body was recovered from the banks of the Ganga River in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, over 2,500 kms away from home.

Hemant Sharma from Delhi, Rosmita’s boyfriend and Hemant’s friend, Pankaj Kokar from Haryana were with Rosmita and they are the ones who informed Shivpuri Police in Uttarakhand about Rosmita’s body found by the river banks.

In this case too, CM Sarma requested his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Dhami to look into the case. CM Dhami promptly directed Uttarakhand DGP to take up the case. Police said that there were no external injury marks on Rosmita’s body. They found Roshmita’s WhatsApp chat details mentioning her career disappointments, and it seemed she was unhappy about her performances. But they have not found any suicide note. But even after 11 days, there is no clarity if Rosmita’s death was murder or suicide.

In the third case, on June 11, Shivali Kashyap, an interior designer from Nazira died in Ahmedabad. Just thirty minutes prior to her death, Shivali spoke to her mother and sounded all fine and thirty minutes later she was no more. The 27-year-old allegedly fell from a second-floor apartment in Ghatlodia area of the city in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

While the police have registered a case of accidental death and suspect suicide, her family believes this was no accident. They demanded a detailed probe, alleging foul play and pointing fingers at her live-in partner, Saurav Purohit. Shivali had been in Gujarat for about five years. She was living with Saurav in a rented flat at Vardhaman Nagar Society for the past four months. According to her family, the two were interior designers working on separate projects. They claimed an engagement was on the cards, but tensions between the couple had grown in recent weeks, especially over financial issues. Her father even alleged that Saurav used to beat her up and he told her to cut ties with Saurav. But she continued to live with him.

Police on the other hand, stated that Shivali had been under medication for depression and had reportedly spoken about her emotional distress after a dispute with her parents over her relationship with Purohit.

Families of all the three women await answers and justice as they mourn the deaths of their daughters.
