In an incredible breakthrough, a 1.5-billion-year-old stromatolite fossil has been uncovered at Fossil Park in Mamley, Namchi district, Sikkim. This fossil, which predates similar discoveries from the Ottawa River in Canada, Shark Bay in Australia, and Montana in the USA, is a significant find that offers new insights into Earth’s early life forms. Stromatolites played a key role in the creation of essential elements like oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, contributing to the evolution of life.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, in an official statement on his Facebook account, hailed the discovery as a monumental step in cementing Sikkim’s place in global geology and paleontology. The government plans to transform the Fossil Park into a world-class fossil theme park under the Department of Mines & Geology. The park will feature a captivating light and sound show narrating Earth’s geological history, a state-of-the-art museum showcasing precious specimens, and exhibits displaying index fossils from across the world.
“We are committed to developing a geopark village that will serve as a hub for researchers, scientists, and tourists alike,” the chief minister announced, expressing his vision for Sikkim to become a globally significant destination in geological and paleontological research.
